ADENOCARCINOMA OF THE GASTROESOPHAGEAL JUNCTION: DETERMINATION OF IMMUNOSTAINING OF HER2/NEU RECEPTOR
Abstract
Objective. To determine the overexpression of HER2/neu receptor by immunohistochemistry in the cell block of patients diagnosed with adenocarcinoma (ADC) of the gastroesophageal junction (GEJ) who underwent surgery in the Servicio Oncológico Hospitalario (SOH) del Instituto Venezolano de los Seguros Sociales (IVSS) between January 2010 and December 2014. Method. A retrospective, descriptive exploration was performed. The patient data were taken from January 2010 to December 2014, considering population for this study patients diagnosed with adenocarcinoma of the GEJ who underwent surgery in the SOH IVSS in the period indicated. The sample totaled 20 patients. The statistical analysis is descriptive. Results. 20 samples from biopsies of patients with ADC GEJ were collected between January 2010 and December 2013. The mea age was 60.1 ± 9.34. Sixteen cases (80%) were male and 4 (20%), female. A total of 4 (20% patients reported an immunolabelling +3 (3 men and 1 woman). Also, of those 4 cases, 1 corresponded to stage IIA, another to IIIA, another to IIIC and the last to IVB. In general, the IVB stage was the most frequently found. Ten cases had a score of Siewert II; 7, Siewert I and 3, Siewert III. Conclusion. These data correlate adequately with international literature, so it is recommended that immunohistochemical study of HER2/neu be practiced in patients with ADC GEJ to provide the benefit of treatment with biological therapies.
