THE ROLE OF NEUROPEPTIDES AND GASTROINTESTINAL HORMONES IN BARIATRIC SURGERY
Abstract
These days obesity is considered a pandemic. The etiopathogenesis of this disease is complex and multifactorial, which makes it difficult to treat it effectively in the long run. Bariatric surgery is currently the most effective treatment with significant and lasting weight loss, causing a great improvement in obesity-related comorbidities. Gastrointestinal hormones and neuropeptides play an essential role in weight loss and resolution of bariatric surgery-related comorbidities, although the mechanisms are not completely elucidated. The objective of this article is to describe the pathophysiological mechanism of bariatric surgery.
Key words. Neuropeptides, gastrointestinal hormones, bariatric surgery, obesity, adipose tissue.
