INVESTIGATION ON PREDOMINANT LEARNING STYLES AMONG PROFESSIONALS COMPARED TO UNIVERSITY STUDENTS

Abstract
Introduction. Different learning styles (LS) in adults have been described: active (A), reflective (R), pragmatic (P), and theoretical (T), and each person has a particular preference for each of the four. In turn, there are educational strategies that best suits each of them. Goals. To compare individually each of the learning styles among medical students and professionals. To compare among professionals the different LSs according to their specialty. To relate previous teacher training and current teaching activity. To establish a comparison between different LSs according to the presence or absence of previous teacher’s training and current teaching activity. To determine the predictors of higher scores in the different LSs. Material and methods. Prospective, observational, cross-sectional, and analytical design. Twenty-two professionals, attendees at a pedagogy course, and 53 students from a hospital unit were included. The study was conducted in 2010. A questionnaire on learning styles, and descriptive, inferential statistics, and linear regression were applied. Results. 62.66% of participants are women. Age: professionals (PR): 38.72 ± 1.84, and students (ST): 27.92 ± 1.84. Among the PR: 63.63% are graduates from Universidad de Buenos Aires (UBA), 72.72% are trained in clinical specialties; their professional experience is of 15.54 ± 1.84 years. The LSs were compared in PR versus ST: for p 9.00 ± 2.50 versus 6.00 ± 2,00, p 0.02; nonsignificant p (NSp) for A, R, and T. Clinical specialties versus surgical specialties, NSp for all four LSs. Presence or absence of previous teaching courses, NSp for all four LSs. Presence or absence of current teaching activity, NSp for the four LSs. Predictors of higher scores: type of university, NSp for the four LSs; older age, p = 0.02 for A and NSp for R, T, and P; longer professional experience, p = 0.03 for A and NSp for R, T, and P. Conclusions. There is no difference between active, reflective and theoretical learning styles among professionals and students, but those differences do exist as regards the pragmatic style, in favor of professionals. Older age and longer professional experience are predictors of greater development of active learning in professionals.

Key words. Learning styles, teachers, students, reflective, active, pragmatic, theoretical.
